Lauren Singdahlsen provides private instruction for children and adult students, both beginning and continuing. She lives and teaches in Chapel Hill, NC, near Smith Level Rd.

Lauren’s goal is that every student learn to enjoy playing the piano on their own terms, studying at their own pace, remembering to listen, and to have fun in the process. With a classical background, Lauren uses a reading based approach, but draws on multiple methods and materials in her teaching. Ideally, piano lessons can provide you with skills to keep playing the piano for the rest of your life.

Lauren Singdahlsen has been teaching for over 25 years. She received a BA in Music from Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania, where she was a student of Leslie Spotz. Following graduation, she returned to Durham where she continued her studies for many years with Barbara Rowan of UNC and Chapel Hill, working on Taubman Technique and on developing her own repertoire. In addition to maintaining her private studio, Lauren has also taught in the extended day and summer programs at Durham Academy, and served on the boards of the Durham Music Teachers Association and the North Carolina Symphony.

Lauren is a member of the Chapel Hill Music Teachers Association, Durham Music Teachers Association, The North Carolina Music Teachers Association and the Music Teachers National Association. She is currently playing with the Singdahlsen Trio, which practices in her home.

Lauren Singdahlsen is a wonderful combination of kindness, patience, knowledge, and expertise. The PERFECT piano teacher for our family!

I have been one of Lauren's adult students for over 12 years, and my son took lessons from her for several years. When I was young, I studied piano for eight years with several teachers, but stopped when it became a joyless chore. As an adult, I was still interested in playing but never actually did anything about it. When my son asked for piano lessons, Lauren was highly recommended by friends. After seeing the excellent experience my son was having with Lauren, I was moved to take up the piano again. I've studied music from the Elizabethan period to the Baroque to jazz songs of the 1920s-1930s. Lauren has taught me not just the playing of the pieces but techniques for learning them and understanding their underlying structure. The difference is comparable to reading phonetically versus reading with comprehension. Lauren is without doubt the finest piano teacher I've known, and I unreservedly recommend her whether for a young person or an adult, a beginner or an advanced player.

Miss Lauren takes the utmost care and patience with all of her students in her piano class, from teaching which note is which to helping them learn complicated music theory. While valuing the classics, she encourages your curiosity in music and gives you the freedom to explore. Miss Lauren is an all-around superb teacher.

When my daughter was barely old enough to sit still on a piano bench, I started looking for a piano teacher. I had grown up taking lessons with a great teacher and loved learning piano, so wanted my daughter to have a similar, wonderful experience. For the ten years she took piano lessons with Lauren Singdahlsen, she did. Lauren's teaching was focused yet flexible, warm yet professional, challenging yet kid-friendly. While highlighting classical music, she always encouraged my daughter to have fun, explore and express herself. She really listened to her and developed lessons geared toward her increasing abilities and interests. It was thrilling to see my daughter gain skill and confidence at the piano. Best of all, Lauren modeled and instilled a love of piano that will last a lifetime.
